How 54 Design Group approaches website design
It’s no secret I’m a fan of the outdoors and along with many others who are, have experienced that empty feeling when you’re lost or perhaps not “found”. If you’ve been there, you know what I mean.
Maybe not to the degree of the Donner Party but nonetheless, you can’t find the trail or your car. You know something’s not right and you can’t put your finger on it but you’d like nothing more than to back out of the situation, retrace your steps and get back to your starting point.
For me that seemed like a great analogy to website design for many people. You’re in the middle of the process, things aren’t going quite as planned and to back up and turn around may be chancy. What you needed was a good platform, a clear direction and solid information about the terrain. Sound about right?
I have been involved with website design/development for almost 18 years in one capacity or another for clients in both the public and private sector. Working with them in a variety of platforms including WordPress, Squarespace, Weebly, Homestead, Wix, SiteBuilder, Xara, etc., it became evident that not all design tools or platforms work well for all users.
With each user possessing different skill levels, available time, patience, and budgets, I decided that rather than compel a client to use what I thought was best, perhaps the answer was to see what would work best for them. After working in all of these platforms I concluded that WordPress and Squarespace were the best options for most of my clients.
Many of them had made previous choices based on cost, which is unfortunate. I encourage you to reconsider that factor. Within reason make your decision based on the long run. Consider your ability to build upon the website platform you’ve chosen and the commitment of that company or community to support their product. Cost isn’t just the money involved, it’s time, reputation and the lost revenue or trust in having to rebuild a website based on a quick decision. Are we the right choice for everyone, it’s seems unlikely.
